I am now in recovery from severe clinical Depression, an illness which I was diagnosed with at the age of 14yrs. I have experienced first-hand what it is like to suffer with this debilitating illness and know how hard it can be to recover.
My father suffered with depression and had a tendency to attempt suicide whilst I was growing up. My mothers self-esteem was severely dented and she did not have the strength to remove us from an abusive environment. My family environment clearly had an effect on me and I believe that it contributed towards my illness.
I have taken numerous types of anti-depressants, (SSRI's).
To name a few:
I have received Counselling, 1:1 Therapy and Group Therapy and have also admitted myself to private psychiatric hospital (The Cardinal Clinic) as an in-patient for a month and an out-patient for a further two months.
I have tried to gain a perspective on my illness. I have spent hours researching Depression as in- depth as possible by way of reading numerous self-help books and looking up my condition on the Internet. I have also spoken to friends who have been unfortunate to have suffered with depression at some stage of their lives and have therefore had their own experience of the illness.
I am featured on an award winning medical Website called DIPEx, (Database of Individual Patient Experiences).
More recently I was interviewed for an article on Depression which was featured in the Daily Express. I have also been interviewed for the Daily Mail and am waiting for this article to come out.
I have decided to write a book (Breaking the Chain) about my life experiences, which is based around my childhood trauma. I go on to explain how I went about dealing with my depression.
